Gezi Park Once an Armenian Graveyard and Genocide Memorial

The first Armenian genocide memorial, erected in 1919 in Constantinople at the site of the recent Gezi Park clashes in commemoration of “April 11” (old style; April 24 new style), was destroyed after the Kemalist conquest of the Ottoman capital 1924.

Ps: if anyone knows why it was once commemorated on the 11 and later turned to the 24th, I’d love to know!

  1. April 11 and April 24 are the same day, just on different calendars. The date if commemoration was changed likely to more accurately reflect the date on the new calendar.
