According to Movses Khorenatsi, Abgar originates from the king of Persian Armenians. What is known today is that he held the lands of Edessa, which are known as having been part of the Armenian Mesopotamia. He was indeed a Syriac king related to the other Armenian royals in the region. He was called Avak-ayr, meaning “great man” or “older man” on accout of his gentle nature and wisdom in governance. He was also a giant in stature. Unable to pronounce his name correctly, Greeks and Syrians began calling him Abgar.
