From “Vive La France” to “Shame on France!”

It seems Armenians have a tendency for premature celebrations. We also have a tendency to believe in people, always in others and never in ourselves. As such, we have a tendency to be heavily disappointed. All those “Vive La France” cries have turned to disgruntles murmurs. All the “Thank You France” mantras have turned to shame. The French flag is no longer proudly hoisted and the language has lost its luster again. We’re hurt, we’re sad and we have lost a bit more faith in humanity.

It’s a shame, really. Our weakness is our blind love for all those who smile at us, forgetting that those same will drive a knife through our backs. We refuse to believe the worst in people, always giving everyone another chance, a second a third, a tenth and hundredth.

Today, the world proved itself a hypocrite. Again. And again. And once more, again. As Lawrence of Arabia said years ago in 1919, Jews hate Armenians more than “anti-Semites” hate Jews (Anti-Semite is in quotations because Arabs are every bit the Semitic race as well, and possibly more). It’s therefore not very surprising that Israel not only refuses to recognize the Genocide but influences the world against recognition and against placing what happened to us on equal standing as what occurred to them. Individually, they are great people. Quite a few are great friends of the Armenian community and should be thanked greatly for that. However, when it comes to politics, they can play as dirty as the rest, if not worse. Those who have felt suffering on their skins should not allow for more people to suffer. Unfortunately, it appears as if some want to believe they’re the only ones who could have such a history and such a present. A rather absurd thought.

The ciminalization of the denial of the Armenian Genocide has been struck down as unconstitutional. Now, I raise my voice alongside millions in this world, demanding to know why it’s constitutional to punish the denial of the Holocaust? Armenians in France and everywhere else such a bill exists should stand up and say, THERE WAS NO HOLOCAUST! What will you do? Arrest millions? If you can lie about what happened to us, we sure as hell can lie about your history!
