In the Autumn of 1963, Armenian geologists discovered a foundry dating to the 3rd-1st millennium BC, on one of the volcanic hills south of the city of Vagharshabad mentioned by Movses Khorenatsi. It was discovered that there are over 30 large and small metal smelters which were 1500 yrs older than the oldest known furnaces in the Near East, found in Palestine. Large pieces of metal slag, preserved in the furnaces as metal moulds, were also found.
